NAGPUR: In an effort to improve the quality of education in medical colleges, the Medical Council of India (MCI) is encouraging continuous professional development of medical teachers. The council has started many new initiatives and incentive schemes to attract teachers to upgrade not just their knowledge but also conduct research in teaching technology, making it more interactive.
Dr Ashok Gupta, one of the five members of board of governors of MCI, said that till recently there were no guided policies in "research in medical education technology". The council has in last few years made it mandatory for all teachers in medical colleges to publish papers, at least a minimum number, for seeking promotions. A lecturer has to have at least two published papers for becoming an associate professor (AP) and an AP minimum four papers.
"All these developments and concepts like micro-teaching will show results ten years from now. But the process for better academic atmosphere has already started," he said.Gupta was in the city to inaugurate a one-day conference of Medical Education Technology (MET) unit of NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences (NKPSIMS) Research - MET: Opportunities & Challenges. It was aimed at sensitizing medical teachers from all over Maharashtra on areas and avenues of research to improve classroom teaching learning process.
The MCI member said local universities like the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences should support such efforts and also launch programmes to promote research in medical education. The effort of bringing in NRI doctors from USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia is a good example.
Dr Ved Prakash Mishra, vice-chancellor of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences, asked the college to bring out a white paper on the conclusions of the conference and expand its horizon to a national level.
Dr S Dasgupta, the dean of NKPSIMS, too stressed on the increasing relevance of making the medical education more meaningful and interactive.
The council is planning to make a MET unit compulsory in each medical college in the future and the conference was a preparatory step towards understanding the subject and improving the quality in medical education.
Others to speak at the even were Dr Avinash Supe, the director of foundation for advancement in International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), Ranjeet Deshmukh, the chairman of Vidya Shikshan Prasarak Mandal (VSPM), Ashish Deshmukh, the VSPM treasurer, Dr Suresh Chari, the conference organizing chairman and Dr Shubdha Gade, the organizing secretary.
The college has created an e-mail ID for every participant to send in their feedback which will be used to prepare a white paper on research in MET. "The white paper will be sent to the council as soon as it is ready," said Dr Gade.
