Perceiving Rubrics of the Mind
MASTER Farokh Jamshed

The guidelines mentioned below should be followed while reading this book:
(1) Rubrics are mentioned alphabetically from A to Z.
(2) Adjacent to the main rubric the source of the rubric is mentioned: e.g.
K - Kent's Repertory;
BB - Boenninghausen's Repertory;
S - Synthetic Repertory;
V - Vithoulkas Repertory.
Z- Complete Repertory
(3) The Cross References are mentioned wherever applicable. It should be seen from that repertory
whose code letter is indicated adjacent to the rubric.
(4) Wherever necessary, meaning as well as the explanation of the rubric is mentioned. If the rubric is
self-explanatory, I have not given the meaning.
(5) Whenever the patient presents with certain mental symptoms, it should be co-related with various
psychological conditions. I have made an attempt by writing the names of the important psychiatric
diseases, which frequently have the given rubric as one of their symptoms, e.g. Antagonism - is present
in disease conditions like personality disorders and Schizophrenia.
(6) Lastly, I have mentioned the name of the important remedies given for the particular rubric.
The principles of homoeopathy its conceptional issues and psychiatry
Since its origin, over 150 years ago, homoeopathy has placed particular emphasis on the humanistic
treatment of the mentally ill. The concept of the person as the totality, rather than as just a collection of
inter-related anatomical parts has always played a fundamental role in homoeopathy.
The most important aim of a homoeopathic physician is to make an attempt to understand the origin of
mental disorder. To achieve the same, one has to give attention to individual's attitudes. Quality and
depth of relationship, degree of stability, flexibility and involvement is society and the ability to express
as well as control feelings are all used in homoeopathy to prepare mental state of various drug pictures.
The homoeopathic attitude to the patient with psychological problems is primarily one of the patient
under excessive emotional pressure. These may be expressed indirectly as a variety of physical
disabilities which are not responding to treatment. It is against the philosophy of homoeopathy to stick a
label of Neurosis on the patient's head and advise him to either learn to live with the situation or to take
tranquilizers indefinitely. Instead, homoeopathy makes an attempt to judge the situation quite
differently; by trying to evolve his conceptual image and select the remedy accordingly. I may add that
there is no emphasis on changing the basic nature of the person, his values or the way he sees the
future. This area is left to the individual to work out for himself when he becomes mentally stronger.
Such strengths occur quite naturally through the action of homoeopathic potencies, particularly when
taken in higher dilutions. It is a well known fact that during major surgical procedures like organ
transplant and valve replacement, post-operative complications and convalescence are extremely good
whenever the patient is acknowledged and treated as an intelligent person with genuine feelings. Hence
I may stress that even in case of mechanical repair, the concept of the whole patient should be looked
for and we may stop seeing the patient "as a machine in for servicing."

It is wrong to believe that homoeopathy does not believe in investigating a psychologically ill patient. In
fact when appropriate, homoeopath uses all the conventional diagnostic investigation and procedures
to diagnose the correct mental disorder according to the standard format given in the Book viz. III
Edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM III) together with its revision (DSMIII-
R).
The homoeopathic doctor differs in some respects from the practitioner of the conventional allopathic
medicine, which is based on concepts of treatment by opposites - with the emphasis on the suppression
of the symptoms using the conventional approach. When the patient is excited, a drug is given to calm
him down. By contrast, the homoeopath is opposed to all forms of suppression of symptoms and of the
individual.
When the homoeopathic patient is excited and agitated he is given a remedy, which in natural form,
would provoke a similar reaction; e.g. Cham., Stram., etc.
It is the ability of the remedies to produce similar symptoms which acts positively for the patient and
that is the reason why a homoeopath talks of curing "Like by Like". Basically symptoms are important for
many reasons, as they are normal healthy reactions to stress and strain. I may add over here that they
are the signs of healthy vitality. When there is estate of severe exhaustion, particularly in the elderly,
such a reaction may be lacking, so that a serious condition may be present without there being any
marked sign of the diseases - as with malignancy.
