But who decides what an acceptable dissertation looks like? What are the standards by which faculty evaluate dissertations?</span><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; margin-top: 0.5em;">Identifying these criteria—and they do exist, however reluctant faculty are to write them down—could help faculty develop informed measures of learning outcomes. These measures would constitute powerful indicators of the success of research training, provide a method for evaluating PhD programs, and allow more objective comparisons among them. Such standards would also make evaluation of dissertations more valid and reliable across candidates in a department or field.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; margin-top: 0.5em;">This article draws on a study that asked faculty to make explicit their implicit criteria for evaluating dissertations. They were also asked what it means to make an original and significant contribution in their disciplines and what the purpose of the dissertation is. The study targeted faculty members who had produced high numbers of PhDs in four science disciplines (biology, electrical and computer engineering, physics or physics and astronomy, and mathematics); three social science disciplines (economics, psychology, and sociology); and three humanities disciplines (English, history, and philosophy).</div></div>

This multi-center study looked at 3,981 patients, 70 years old or older, treated by homeopathic physicians in primary care practices in Germany and Switzerland.   Ninety-eight percent of all diagnoses were chronic with an average duration of 11.5 years.  Eighty-two percent of the patients were taking medication at the start of treatment.<br>

The Federation of Rationalist Associations of India raised questions about what people generally accepted as a system of scientific knowledge during a workshop on development of scientific temper here on Sunday.<br>

A number of “healing methods” which were being passed off as “medical systems” were not really systems of medicine at all, said Srinivas Kakkilaya.<br>
<br>
Dr. Kakkilaya explained the difference between traditional quacks who peddled medicines in small bottles at public places and fraudulent activities such as knowingly misleading a person, about the extent of his medical knowledge.<br>
<br>
He spoke about systems of “healing” which, he said, many doctors opposed as they did not consider them as legitimate medical systems. Some doctors preferred to use the term “evidence-Based medicine” rather than the word allopathy, because the word was coined as an opposite to the word “homeopathy” by Samuel Hahnemann, German founder of the system. Dr. Kakkilaya said that systems such as AYUSH (Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) were unsubstantiated systems. Giving an example, he said 3,000 years ago, Ayurveda was probably the most advanced medical system because of its understanding of the human anatomy. Even today, a large part of what was taught to students was the same as it was in the original Ayurveda texts. He said that even though Ayurveda had no concept of the heart as an organ that pumped blood to the whole body, students were taught how to cure heart disease.<br>

The patient wishes to be covered; cool air is unpleasant; cold shiverings frequently run through the body; photophobia; drinks little often; hot skin, plethoric habit.<br>

Patient generally feels worse in the afternoon and evening; from draft of air; from rising; from suppressed perspiration.<br>

Here, too, we see that Belladonna differs very essentially from either of the preceding drugs.<br>

There is also a wide-spread practice of administering a dose of sulphur in high potency when other ‘seemingly well indicated’ remedies fail, so as to arouse reaction. There is also a saying that the frequency of prescibing sulphur and practitioner’s knowledge of materia medica have an inversely proportional relationship, which means, the less the doctor knows his  materia medica, the more he is compelled to use sulphur frequently in his practice. It may necessarily lead to the study of the various molecular blocks and biochemical deviations underlying the vast symptomatology of suphur. Such an analysis may also show the way for similar scientific studies about other important drugs of homoeopathic materia medica, which will especially be relevant when we try to present homoeopathy as a higher branch of modern molecular medicine.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Homeopathic study of sulphur should be undertaken with the understanding about the role played by  sulphur radicals and suphur-containing functional groups in the interactions of biological molecules. Sulphur-containing HS group is present in almost all active sites of protein molecules such as enzymes and receptors. Bacterial toxins and other biological toxins of protein nature also have sulphur-containing functional groups. Many phytochemicals which are used as drugs, or are essential parts of our diet also contain sulphur radicals or functional groups. As such, sulphur and sulphur containing substances can interfere in hundreds of essential  biomoecular interactions through competitive inhibitions and produce pathological errors in vital processes. Potentized sulphur and sulphur compounds, which contain molecular imprints of sulphur can rectify these molecular errors, thereby acting as a major therapeutic weapon in the homeopathic armamentarium.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">In my opinion, we have to undertake a huge research project to study   the symptomatology of all important drugs of our materia medica, in such a way that we can identify their individual symptom complexes in relation with the structure and configuration of the functional groups and moieties of various constituent molecules of the drug substances.  As in the case of every state of pathology, no drug symptom can be  produced in an organism without a corresponding chain of molecular processes underlying it, initiated by the interaction of some or other  drug molecules with some or other biological molecules. From a scientific point of view, drug symptoms should be interpreted and utilized as minute biological indicators of corresponding molecular blocks and biochemical deviations brought about in the organism by the action of drug molecules. We should begin learning materia medica from this scientific perspective, at least in future.</div></div>

There are two types of blepharitis:<br>

A new clinic is now providing homeopathic treatment to NHS patients in Liverpool. The Liverpool Medical Homeopathy Service (LMHS) operates from the Old Swan Health Centre in Old Swan and is staffed by medically trained homeopaths. Patients can gain NHS access to the service through a letter of referral from their GP.<br>
<br>
Liverpool PCT is commissioning the new service from the LMHS which is a Community Interest Company, a limited company created to provide a service for the benefit of the community and not purely for private advantage. The setting up of the clinic also highlights the new approach to commissioning NHS services being adopted as part of the government’s NHS reforms.<br>
<br>
Dr Hugh Nielsen, Clinical Director at the clinic said: "The opening of LMHS represents the next chapter in a long and distinguished history of homeopathic provision in Liverpool. There has been a homeopathy service in the city for more than a century, which became part of the NHS at its inception in 1948.<br>
"Patient satisfaction with Liverpool homeopathy is very high. A patient experience survey conducted by Liverpool Community Health during 2010 at the NHS Liverpool department of homeopathic medicine showed that of 165 people questioned, 80 per cent rated the service as excellent, 14 per cent deemed it very good and 5.5 per cent rated it as good."<br>

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said those who wanted to make such claims must first register their products with the ministry.<br>
<br>
“We have formed a working committee to look into an approved list of claims for traditional medicine.<br>
<br>
“Two categories have been identified for traditional claims – for ‘traditional health use’ and ‘traditional treatment’,” he said after launching the Fifth Global Bio-Herbs Economic Forum here yesterday.<br>
<br>
The medicines, he added, could be registered online via the ministry’s website.<br>
<br>
“The registration will be completed in 60 days,” said Liow, adding that lab tests would also be conducted to check on some of the claims.<br>
<br>
He added that in some cases, traditional medicines would come with historical records sufficient to support the claim while some might need lab study evidence to justify the claim.<br>
<br>
He said the ministry, through its working committee, was also looking at expanding the claims allowed for traditional medicine and health supplements.<br>

This implies that the broader the inclusion of varied, effective approaches to maintaining health, the more affordable and tailored one’s path to health could be.<br>

One of the challenges to having good choices is how inclusive those choices are with respect to the methods of care that Arizona citizens find effective and economic. To the extent those effective methods are not part of the conversation the care offered through the exchange may be inadequate or discriminatory.<br>

According to the National Health Service (NHS), UK, 1 in every 3 women will have a UTI before she is 24 years old, and about half of all females will have at least one UTI during their lifetime. In the UK approximately 1 in every 2,000 otherwise healthy men develops a UTI.<br>

I think we have to re-invent ‘miasm of sycosis’ of Hahnemann on the basis of modern understanding of gonorrhoea and Human Papillomma Virus infections<br>

We are taught that ‘sycosis’ is the miasm of gonorrhoea. But on closely observing the symptoms said to be of ‘sycotic miasm’, we can understand that many of those symptoms like warts belong to human papilloma virus infection. Gonorrhoea and HPF comes mostly as mixed infections. Since much information was not available during Hahnemann’s time about HPF as the causative agent of ‘ano-genital warts’ or ‘figwart disease’ and ‘uterine fibromas’, he attributed all these complaints and symptoms to gonorrhoea, and called it ‘sycotic miasm’. In most occasions he refers his miasm of ‘sycosis’ as ‘miasm of figwart disease’, not ‘miasm of gonorrhoea.. ‘Figwart disease is not gonorrhoea; it is Human Papilloma Virus disease.  It is obvious that hahnemann was confused about gonorrhoea and figwart disease. Since he could not differentiate between gonorrhoea and HPF, he wrongly considered ‘figwart disease’ as part of gonorrhoea.<br>
<br>

“In Europe and also on the other continents so far as it is known, according to all investigations, only three chronic miasms are found, the diseases caused by which manifest themselves through local symptoms, and from which most, if not all, the chronic diseases originate; namely, first, SYPHILIS, which I have also called the venereal change disease; then sycosis, or the fig-wart disease, and finally the chronic disease which lies at the foundation of the eruption of itch; i. e., the PSORA; which I shall treat of first as the most important”.<br>
See, here hahnemann does not even mention gonorrhoea when introducing ‘sycosis’. He said “sycosis, the figwart disease”. Obviously, he is confused between ‘figwart disease’ and ‘gonorrhoea’ as the causative infectious agent behind sycotic miasm.<br>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">In Chronic Diseases, Hahnemann says about SYCOSIS as follows:</span><br>

A well-conducted systematic review from a research team in the USA has scrutinised randomised placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) of homeopathy in psychiatric conditions.<br>

RCTs were included if they met 7 criteria and were assessed for possible bias using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) 50 guidelines. Identified studies were grouped into anxiety or stress, sleep or circadian rhythm complaints, premenstrual problems, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mild traumatic brian injury, and functional somatic syndromes. Twenty-five eligible studies were identified; study quality according to SIGN 50 criteria varied, with 6 assessed as good with respect to minimizing bias, 9 as fair, and 10 as poor. Outcome was unrelated to SIGN quality. <br>
<br>
In the category of functional somatic syndromes 5 of the 6 studies provided some evidence for efficacy in either fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.<br>

The Supreme Administrative Court has recently ruled that Swedish doctors can openly recommend homeopathy to their patients. Until recently homeopathy had not been accepted by the Swedish health authorities as an official therapeutic approach, and doctors in Sweden were not allowed to prescribe homeopathic medicines.<br>

The court case began several years ago when a medical doctor, who was trained in homeopathy in the UK and used this therapy in his practice, was put on probation by the Medical Responsibility Board (Hälso- och Sjukvårdens AnsvarsNämnd - HSAN). The doctor appealed the decision on the grounds that he just used homeopathy when the patient requested it and only when conventional treatment had turned out to be ineffective. After being sentenced in two lower courts, he was forbidden to use homeopathy. The verdict claimed that homeopathy is unscientific, thus ignoring the growing evidence base of the effectiveness of homeopathy.<br>
<br>
Just recently, after years of discrimination against him and his patients, his case came at last to the highest court. This court decided that patients were not exposed to any danger and the doctor had used scientific knowledge when it was necessary.<br>

Is there any scientific basis for this belief? After studying the molecular structure of camphor and understanding the mechanism of its interactions, I think there could be some amount of truth in it, though somewhat distorted and far stretched. Camphor preparations containing molecular forms of camphor, such as crude camphor, mother tincture, low potencies below 12c as well as various camphor products can antidote a wide class of potentized homeopathic drugs- not ‘universal’.<br>

Camphor is a volatile organic aroma compound with chemical formula C10H16O, belonging to the class known as terpenoids. When kept open, its molecules would easily diffuse into the atmosphere.<br>
Camphor is a cyclic terpene, having a C=O moeity in its functional group. Such compounds are called carbonyl compounds, which also include aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acid, esters, amides, enones, acyl halides, acid unhydrides etc. Most of these substances are aroma compounds, which are responsible for the property known as fragrance and flavors. Compounds that contain C-O bonds each possess differing reactivity based upon the location and hybridization of the C-O bond, owing to the electron-withdrawing effect of sp hybridized oxygen.Medicinal properties of various vegetable substances and some animal products are mostly due to the presence of molecules having highly reactive C=O moeity in their functional groups.<br>

In fact, at the 66th World Homeopathic Congress of Limhi (Liga Medicorum Homeopathica Internationalis) here, a case study of a double side breast cancer patient who was treated successfully with homeopathy was presented. According to Vats, the patient was a "Stage five" case.<br>
<br>
"Homeopathy can effectively support ongoing allopathic treatment in all types of cancers, improve the quality of life of the patient and also the life span," Vats told IANS on the sidelines of the Dec 1-4 conference.<br>
<br>
He said that homeopathy can effectively treat diabetes, thyroid, hypertension, AIDS, asthama, but the results vary from case to case. Sometimes a patient may take longer to show results, he said. "In cases treated for many years with allopathy, it becomes difficult to treat with homeopathy as the patients develop homeopathy drug dependency," he said.<br>

The report, published under the title "Homeopathy in Europe - Effectiveness, Appropriateness, Safety, Costs", was commissioned by the Swiss health authorities to inform decision-making on the further inclusion of homeopathy in the list of services covered by statutory health insurance. Other studies carried out as part of the Swiss Complementary Medicine Evaluation Programme (PEK) caused a massive stir due to their schematic and exclusively quantitative (negative-) outcomes for homeopathy. The present report, in contrast, offers a differentiated evaluation of the practice of homeopathy in health care. It confirms homeopathy as a valuable addition to the conventional medical landscape – a status it has been holding for a long time in practical health care.<br>

Can homoeopathy help curb killer disease Japanese Encephalitis (JE) which has claimed over 1,000 lives across the country this year? To ascertain this, the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) of the Health Ministry will soon start clinical trial of homoeopathy on the JE patients in disease endemic zone, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, to test its efficacy.<br>

Over 450 people have died in Gorakhpur so far due to JE. The first-of its kind, trial would be undertaken at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur on 100 patients, mostly children, affected with the disease. As per treatment protocol, two groups of 50 patients each would be formed. One group would be subjected to allopathy medicine while the other would be administered allopathy as well as homoeopathy medicines, Professor C Nayak, former director of the CCRH told The Pioneer.<br>

He said treatment protocol for the two-and-a-half year study has already been approved by Scientific Advisory Committee of CCRH and a positive result from the study on humans will not only silence the sceptics of homoeopathy but would also help in curbing the fatal disease.<br>
<br>
The need for trial to test homoeopathy came as it was found that JE vaccination among children has failed to deliver results with the menace continuing to spread its tentacles. A total over 7,137 cases have been reported till November this year.<br>
