The Department of Ayush (Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy, Naturopathy, and Yoga) will start wellness centres in all 14 districts in the State. The wellness centres will start functioning by introducing yoga and meditation.

In Thiruvananthapuram, there will be two more centres, one in the Assembly and the other at the Secretariat for the public representatives and government employees respectively.

The wellness centres will begin within a month and will impart yoga and meditation twice a day from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. six days a week.

In all other districts, the Ayurveda or Homoeopathy centres will be chosen to begin the wellness centres.

The projects are part of the public health initiative of the National Ayush Mission, says M. Beena, secretary, Department of Ayush.

The department had received Rs.9.5 crore for the project for 2014-15 and a proposal for Rs.11.6 crore for 2015-16 has also been sanctioned.

Delay in the allotment of funds had stalled the implementation of the project, says State Programme Manager Balachandran Nair. The funds for 2014-15 landed only in March 2015.

The Ayush Department will appoint persons qualified as Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) to roll out the programme.

In spite of the fact that the State does not have a course in BNYS, the course is recognised by the State medical council and there are 120 qualified doctors registered in the State, said Dr. Nair.
