Pill can be taken even if one is taking allopathy treatment
At a time when the southern districts are grappling with dengue fever, homoeopathy has come up with a great hope for its prevention. Doctors have started prescribing a medicine that proves to be effective to prevent oneself from dengue attack.
A campaign to prevent dengue through a simple homoeopathy drug was launched in Madurai on Thursday at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) where the pills were distributed to doctors, hospital staff, and nursing students.
This initiative was taken by the Government Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital at Tirumangalam near here at the behest of a Health Minister's directive to create public awareness of the preventive ability of homoeopathy medicine. “There is a very effective prevention drug, ‘Eupatorium Perfoliatum,' in homeopathy. It provides immunity against dengue and this dose has to be taken for three consecutive days. If there are requests from public, we are ready to organise special camps to popularise it,” A. Gopalakrishnan, Principal in-charge, has said.
A team of doctors, house-surgeons and pharmacy staff from the college were present at the GRH camp to distribute the pills and explain its power to prevent dengue.
“In 2002, when there was a major outbreak in Kanyakumari district, we distributed this medicine and fever cases came down. Several papers were published in foreign journals about the preventive/curative potential of homoeopathic pills for dengue control,” Prof. Gopalakrishnan said.
The first preventive camp at the GRH was conducted at the request of Dean A. Edwin Joe. “We have adequate stock of drugs. It is a low-cost medicine with no side-effects. This pill can be taken even if a person is taking allopathy treatment for some other complaint,” he said and sought the permission of the Corporation and municipalities to organise public awareness camps.
Similar camps were being organised in dengue-hit Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts with the permission of State Government.
The team from homoeopathic college included K. Senthil Kumaran, Professor of Medicine, and N. Karthikeyan of Department of Physiology. The free homoeopathy medicine was distributed to 1,050 persons at the GRH camp.
Dr. Edwin Joe and Resident Medical Officer A.Pragadeswaran were of the view that homoeopathy drug for dengue prevention was being promoted with the State government encouraging alternative systems of medicine through a special wing called ‘Ayush.'
