The human resource minister- Kapil Sibal hoped to start the Meta university by next academic year. The university will come up through national knowledge network programme which already connects major institutes across the country through high-speed fibre-based broadband connectivity.
The union minister said, “Meta university will create a platform in cyber space and ultimately the student will get a degree not from one but many universities.” He said under the programme, 31000 colleges and 6400 universities will be connected within next six months.
Students enrolled in a college or a university will be able to pursue courses in other universities and colleges. As now, students registered at one university cannot attend classes or courses offered at another, unless an exchange programme exists between them.
As part of an innovative set up Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT-Delhi are working on creating this Meta-university. This will allow students the flexibility to design their own curriculum and combine subjects of their choice.
