The homeopathy medicine market in India will be worth over Rs.58 billion in the next one decade, a health expert has said. 
 
"Currently the homeopathy market in India is worth Rs.6.3 billion and will be worth Rs.58.73 billion by 2017. It's growing by nearly 25 percent per year," Mukesh Batra, managing director of Dr. Batra's Positive Health Clinics Ltd, said here Thursday. 
 
 
 
 
Quoting a fresh survey by AC Neilson on homeopathy in India, Batra said that this form of medicine is a favourite among people for the treatment of mainly skin, hair, respiratory and arthritis problems. 
 
The survey, which was conducted in seven cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chandigarh - found that 62 percent of current homeopathy users have never tried allopathic treatment.

Besides, about 82 percent of homeopathy users said they would not switch over to allopathic treatment. 
 
"Patients' loyalty, safe practice and fewer side effects are the main reasons for the growth of this sector. It has a huge potential in India but mostly untapped so far," Batra said. 
 
He said nearly one million people practise homeopathy in India. But France is the biggest market for this form of medicine. 
 
Currently the world market for homeopathy is worth Rs.84 billion and France contributes the biggest pie with a market worth Rs.16.8 billion, Batra added. 
 
"By 2017, the homeopathy market will be equivalent to the alternative healthcare market which is Rs.520 billion," he clarified.

Working With the Table 
 
The main part of Periodic table is the periodic table - the window you see first when you run the program.Working with the table itself is simple and intuitive. You will notice that as you pass the mouse pointer over the different elements, a small popup window indicates to you the full name of the element which you are currently over. Also, on the left of the status bar (at the bottom of the main window), you will see the name of the element which you are currently passing over, its symbol. (please see the help section about The Element Information 
Window for more information about the format of the electron configuration).To select a particular element, simply click on it with the default mouse button. You can also navigate the 
elements using they keyboard arrow keys, or the Tab key. You get more information about an element. 
 
If you would like to find an element, Click the Elements drop down list and choose element. The chosen element will be highlighted in Periodic table. Now to get more information about it, either double click that element button or click on "i" symbol on toolbar (at the top of the main window). In order to see the elements of particular Homoeopathic remedy which is made up of elements & minerals, click on Remedy drop down list and select any remedy. It will highlight the positive and negative elements of that remedy.To change the colour configuration of the table, or to specify a custom background image, simply click on the Colored strip image or Go to MenuàEditàSettings. You will be presented with a dialog box which lets you change 
the colour of the different element groups and of the elements row or column and also background wallpaper of the program, This is particularly useful if you are running Windows with a non-standard palette or colour setup 
 
 
 
and are having trouble distinguishing or viewing certain elements because of conflicting colours.The Element Information Window The Element Information Window can be displayed by either clicking on an element or choosing Element Information symbol "i" on the toolbar when that element is highlighted. The Element Information Window displays all the information about the currently selected element organised by property. The units of a specific property are given beside the value. Also, the electron configuration is not given in the standard format; where regularly a number would be given in superscript, it is here represented by a regular

Viewing Homoeopathic remedies which belongs to element and mineral group and its positive and negative 
elements is now easy with periodic table. 
If one come across a particular rubric from repertory having few mineral remedies, one can use Notepad feature of Periodic table to see only mineral remedies and their individual elements out of all the remedies.This feature is provided keeping in mind CARA users (CARA Repertory software for homoeopathic practise). Go to MenuàUtilityàNotepad. Now select any rubric in cara, copy it ( by right-clicking rubric and selecting Copy or pressing ctrl+c keys) and paste it in textbox by clicking Paste button. The selected rubric and all the remedies listed under it is seen in the box. Now click Show button or press Enter on the keyboard and watch the resulting mineral remedies in the Remedy list as well as highlighted element symbols on the periodic table. It indicate 
 
Rubric, what are the mineral remedies listed under it and position of their element, which group they belongs to, in the periodic table. If you wish to see only Positive elements or only Negative elements of remedies, simply select the options given before Show button, and then click Show. It will display only the selected option elements.You can save this results, so that your time is saved in copying & pasting rubric from cara.One can give Path where CARA is installed by going MenuàEditàSettings and selecting cara path by clicking 
Browse button. To open CARA from Periodic table, go to MenuàUtilitiesàOpen Cara or by simply clicking CARA symbol on the toolbar Since this feature is compatible with CARA Repertory users only, selecting rubrics and pasting from other repertory software may give erroneous results. 
 
Storing, Opening and Deleting results 
 
It is time consuming to copy & paste rubric and waiting for results to be plotted in Periodic table which may take 
few seconds to few minutes. 
To make Periodic table work more faster & efficiently, Save result fascility is provided. After getting results on 
screen, if you wish to save this result, go to MenuàUtilityàSave results. A small window appears with rubric in the 
file name box. Simply click Save button and it is save permanently. 
Next time if you want to refer the same rubric & its elements, then go to MenuàUtilityàOpen results, select desired 
rubric from drop down list and press Open. You can opt for looking only +ve or only -ve elements also. 
One can delete the unwanted rubric result by going MenuàUtilityàDelete result.

What’s pulsatilla? Where does homeopathic flu remedy Oscillococcinum come from? Many of us have used homeopathic remedies without taking the time to investigate what’s really in them. Pulsatilla comes from pasque flower, also known as prairie crocus or meadow anemone. As its names indicate, it grows on prairies and meadows, and is native to North America. If used in too high a quantity, it’s toxic and slows the heart. As a homeopathic remedy, it’s good for moodiness and tearfulness, and helps to relieve PMS. It’s also helpful for productive coughs and congestion. 
 
The active ingredient in Oscillococcinum is a substance by the complicated name of anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum, or extract of Muscovy duck heart and liver. Yes, you read that right. French doctor Joseph Roy started using it in 1917 when he observed oscillating bacteria in the blood of people with the Spanish flu. He found what he thought was the same bacteria on the livers of Muscovy ducks. As a homeopathy treatment, an extremely diluted version of this bacteria is then used to alleviate flu symptoms. 
 
 
Nux vomica is used to treat sleeplessness, painful menstrual periods, and the desire to blow off steam and numb oneself with tobacco, alcohol, sex and rich food. It’s found in the seeds of fruit from the strychnine tree, a poisonous deciduous tree that grows in India. Strychnine is a well-known poison that may have featured in the illnesses and deaths of several notable people, such as Alexander the Great and blues star Robert Johnson. Again, because it’s so diluted in homeopathic form, there’s no danger of poisoning when ingesting it. 
 
Other homeopathic medicines with interesting origins include silicea, which comes from flint rock; lachesis muta, which is snake venom; and glonoinum, also known as nitroglycerine.

Eligibility criteria 
a. B.H.M.S., Graded B.H.M.S. degree from any recognized University from anywhere in India 
 
b. The candidates who have completed or will complete their rotating internship for one year after passing the B.H.M.S examination on or before 15.04.2011 are eligible to apply. 
 
c. Application for admission to MD (Homoeopathy) Courses will not be accepted unless the candidates have got themselves registered (Provisional or Permanent) with any State Council of Homoeopathy or Central Council of Homoeopathy. 
 
A candidate who is not registered with the West Bengal Council of Homoeopathy or Central Council of Homoeopathy shall have to obtain registration with West Bengal Council of Homoeopathy or Central Council of Homoeopathy within one month of admission to the PG course. 
 
d. Candidates who are already pursuing any other course are not eligible for admission till they complete the course or are likely to complete the course within 30.04.2011. 
 
 
Written test 
a. A written test will be conducted by the WBUHS to prepare category / caste-wise merit lists of the eligible candidates seeking admission to the MD (Homoeopathy) Courses. 
b. Applicants for admission will be provisionally allowed to appear in the written test provided they have submitted their applications in the prescribed form with requisite fees etc. and have fulfilled the eligibility criteria outlined above. 
c. The question paper for the written test shall be set in English and shall contain 100 single best response type Multiple Choice Questions. 
 
Pattern of Questions 
The following is the list showing the tentative number of questions from different subjects which will be set in the written test: 
1. Anatomy, Physiology, Paediatrics, F.M.T , Community Medicine, Surgery, Obst. & Gynae. , Pathology - 50 nos. 
2. Practice of Medicine, Case taking & Repertory, Materia Medica, Homoepathic Pharmacy and Organon of Medicine & Philosophy - 50 nos. 
 
The duration of the written test will be of 80 minutes. 
 
Marks 
f. A candidate will be awarded four (4) marks for each correct answer. One (1) mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. One (1) mark will also be deducted if more than one response is given to the same question. No deduction will be made for questions not attempted. 
g. Candidates who will secure a minimum of 160 marks in the written test for the seats reserved for SC / ST candidates and a minimum of 200 marks for the seats of all other categories will be empanelled for selection. 
 
Multiple Choices Answering Method Through OMR 
The test will be objective in nature and for each question several suggested answers will be given of which ONLY one answer will be correct. 
The Answer Sheet will be machine-scored and therefore requires specific procedure to be followed as given below: 
The answers will be marked only by blue/ black ball-pen. The pencils are NOT TO BE USED. 
The method of marking answers is indicated below: 
Each question will be followed by answers marked as (a), (b), (c) or (d). Select the most appropriate answer. Then, using blue/ black ball-pen blacken the circle bearing the correct answer index against the serial number of the question on the answer sheet completely. 
Please note that the mark should be dark enough and the circle should be filled in as completely as possible. You need not make special efforts to darken any circle artistically. 
 
 
Merit list of candidates 
a. The rank of the candidates qualifying in the written test will be determined on the basis of the marks obtained by them in the WBPGHAT-2011. The roll numbers of the candidates qualifying in the written test will be arranged in the merit list according to rank and in order of decreasing marks in different categories. 
 
There shall be separate lists also indicating merit position for the SC / ST / Physically Challenged candidates. 
There will be no overall merit list. 
 
In the event of more than one candidate securing the same marks in the written test, the rank shall be determined according to the following principles: 
1. The relative position of such candidates in the merit list will be determined on the basis of the number of correct answers, i.e., the candidate scoring more positive marks will be placed in higher position in the merit list. 
2. If the ranks of the candidates cannot be determined by application of the above principle, the candidate older by age will be in the higher rank than the candidate younger by age. 
c. There shall be separate lists also indicating the merit wise position for the SC / ST / OBC / Physically Challenged candidates. Admission in the OB category is restricted to National Institute of Homoeopathy. 
 
Counseling for selection of candidates for admission 
a. Admission to Post Graduate Homoeopathy Courses will be made through personal appearance (counseling) strictly according to the time schedule to be published by WBUHS. The candidates will be called in order of merit. 
b. The provisional merit list as well as the date and time of counseling will be available at the notice-board of WBUHS and its website. No separate information will be sent to individual candidate in this regard. 
c. Candidates selected for admission through counseling shall have to get themselves admitted within the specified date to be mentioned in the offer letter to be issued after counseling. 
d. A candidate will have to appear in person before the selection committee on the date of counseling; otherwise he / she will be marked absent and his/ her candidature will stand cancelled. 
e. However, in case a candidate is unable to appear in person on the day of counseling, he/she may send his/her authorized representative with an Undertaking and Authority Letter for allotment (proforma for Undertaking and Authority Letter will be available in the University website from the day of publication of results), along with required original documents and fees. The allotment made to the authorized representative shall be binding on the candidate. 
 
Remember 
Do not forget to print filled in application form which is required to be submitted to the WBUHS. Please keep photocopy of those pages for your records. 
 
The print-out of the on-line application is to be sent to WBUHS office along with two photographs pasted in appropriate places, the candidate’s signature, left thumb impression, the bank-draft within the stipulated date. Please follow the instructions given in the print-outs scrupulously before resubmitting the form either personally or by registered post/ speed post/hand delivered so as to reach WBUHS on or before the date mentioned in Admission schedule. 
 
All forms submitted after the stipulated last date will be rejected without any further reference to the candidate and the fees submitted, if any, will be forfeited as processing charges. 
 
Voter ID / PAN card is required for ID verification, so even if the address differs, it is mandatory to give photocopy of the cards. 
 
The Print-copy of the application along with a crossed Demand Draft of Rs. 1000/- in favour of ‘The West Bengal University of Health Sciences’ payable at Kolkata , photographs embossed with current date after 15 February ,2011and photocopy of photo identity card (voter identity/ PAN card) is to be submitted either by hand ( on and before 3 March. 2011) or by Speed/ Registered post ( on or before 8 March, 2011 provided bank draft is made in favour of the University on or before 3 March, 2011) to the office (of the ‘Controller of Examinations, The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, DD-36, Sector-I, Salt Lake, Kolkata- 700064’. In other words, the application must reach the office of the WBUHS 
within the last date as mentioned in the schedule Candidate is requested to write their name and cell no. on the back of the bank draft. 
 
 
The following documents will have to be produced to participate in the counseling 
(i) WBPGHAT Admit Card in original 
(ii) BHMS Degree/ Provisional passing certificate. 
(iii) Internship completion certificate 
(vi) Permanent/ Provisional Registration Certificate issued by State Council of Homoeopathy or Central Council of Homoeopathy. 
(v) School leaving certificate as proof of age 
(vi) BHMS chance certificate 
(vii) SC/ST/PC certificate 
(viii) Duly accepted resignation letter from previous course, if any. 
(ix) Any other relevant document. 
 
The number of seats available for allotment, with their subject-wise break-up, shall be displayed at the venue of counseling. Information in this regard may be available in WBUHS website www.thewbuhs.org prior to counseling. 
The candidates will have the right to choose any one of the available seats at his/ her rank at that point of time and the same will be allotted to him/ her. 
The allotment made will be firm and final. Change of subject is not permitted. Therefore, request for the same will not be entertained by the WBUHS after the allotment. 
 
Reservation of Seats 
For State Colleges viz. D. N. De Homoeopathic Medical College & Mahesh Bhattacharya Homoeopathic Medical College 
Seats at the rate of 22%, 6% & 3% will be kept reserved for the SC, ST & Physically Challenged candidates. ‘Physically Challenged’ means ‘Persons with disabilities’ as defined by MCI, i.e., 40-60% disability involving the lower limb(s) only. The government order and/ or the court directives which will be in force on the respective day of counseling will be followed for this purpose. 
Seats reserved for SC candidates when remaining vacant even after following the instructions laid down in the Govt. orders and notifications, shall be filled in by the ST candidates and vice-versa. 
Seats reserved for PC candidates in the open seats when remaining vacant even after following the instructions laid down in the Govt. orders and notifications, shall be filled in from the general merit list. 
 
For National Institute of Homoeopathy 
15%, 7.5% and 1% seats shall be kept reserved for the SC, ST and Physically Challenged candidates respectively as per the information furnished by the Director NIH in his letter no. F.No. 5-327/NIH/PGT/11/ADMN/2009/2009-2012/2801 dated 11th December 2008. 
 
Revaluation 
There is no provision for rechecking/ re-evaluation of the answer sheets and no query in this regard will be entertained. 
A candidate who is not registered with the West Bengal Council of Homoeopathy or Central Council of Homoeopathy shall have to obtain registration with West Bengal Council of Homoeopathy or Central Council of Homoeopathy within one month of admission to the PG course. 
The in-service candidates may submit applications directly, but ‘No Objection Certificate/ Sponsoring Certificate by competent authority must be submitted at the time of counselling.

Coughs are caused by an irritation in the lining of the throat or lungs, causing mucus build up. When you are sick, the lining of your throat and lungs becomes more sensitive. Cold air, eating or drinking, or sometimes just plain breathing can annoy the already tender lining. Coughs can tickle, or feel dry, making you clear your throat, or cough when you step into cold air. Some coughs are caused by mucus backing up in the throat or lungs. These coughs will end with the coughing up of mucus. These coughs can rattle, or bark. They can be spasmodic, as your body tries to eliminate the mucus. If you use cough drops, or cough syrups, you can prevent your coughs. This doesn't fix the problem that caused the cough; it only suppresses the body`s natural desire to heal. 
 
The best way to stop a cough is to sooth the irritated area, and give the mucus a channel for expression-- a way to get out of your body. Coughs can be softened and soothed by herbal and homeopathic remedies. Good herbal remedies for colds with coughs include: licorice, horehound, mullein, peppermint, elderflowers, and yarrow. Homeopathy offers many cough remedies depending on the type of cough. 
 
 
Remedies for dry coughs 
Belladonna (short, dry, and tickling cough), Bryonia (dry cough with weakness), Gelsemium (dry cough with a dry throat or for bronchitis). Rumex crispus cough is dry and tickling. This is the remedy for a cough brought on as soon as the person goes outside. 
 
Coccus cacti treats a tickling in the throat. Drosera produces a barking cough, worse after midnight, whereas the Dulcamara cough is caused by damp weather. Eupatorium treats a raw, painful cough. You can use Euphrasia to treat a cough that's better lying down in bed at night, but Hepar sulphuratum for a loose, rattling cough, or for someone who loses their voice or croaks. Kali bic is a remedy for someone who coughs more in the morning, on waking, and is worse when eating. Nux vomica treats for a cough that is worse in the morning and in bed. Phosphorus treats a lingering, tickly cough or coughs from a hoarse throat. It is useful in bronchitis or sore throats with raw burning pains in the throat. 
 
The Pulsatilla cough sounds like gagging, or choking, and can be paroxysmal. Antimonium tartaricum treats a cough that is a loose, rattling, and a cough with little expectoration that can be followed by vomiting. Rhus tox cough treats a cold with a cough that is worse from cold weather and worse before a chill. Spongia coughs sound like wheezing and the person can also have stubborn mucous. This cough produces profuse, yellow, lumpy mucus. Vincetoxicum is a remedy useful for colds and viral infections. Vincetoxicum will treat a dry, spasmodic cough, which is painful and may cause a burning sensation in chest.

To simply kill pain is not the objective. Instead, the goal is to not only eliminate the suffering on all levels, but to get to the bottom of the problem and unearth it. Wow…what a great idea! Do you know any other method that approaches illness in this manner? 
Remember, symptoms are only markers. They're not the illness itself. The illness is being reported or spoken through the expression of these outward signs. Eliminating the symptom is akin to removing the smoke alarm in your kitchen. It still doesn't remove the fire blazing on the stove. The anger, resentment and headaches that presented simultaneously are really one illness. Her headaches were an outward manifestation of an inner imbalance of hatred and resentment. 
The goal of homeopathy is to stimulate the person's ability to find its wealth. Surprisingly, the correct homeopathic remedy will allow her anger to be processed so that her head pain will become an unnecessary representation. 
So, once a remedy was chosen based on the totality of symptoms, Jenna's headaches melted away along with resentment. She simply found that the thoughts were more manageable. GP magazine obtained data from two thirds of primary care trusts, showing 31% were paying for patients to use the highly-diluted remedies. 
 
It comes after doctors and the House of Commons' Health Committee called for NHS funding of homeopathy to end. 
 
However, the government has said it is up to local trusts to decide. 
 
The research by the magazine involved sending freedom of information requests to all 151 primary care trusts, which fund local services. 
 
They received 104 responses, with 32 confirming they were funding homeopathy. Of the 72 that did not, 10 had stopped funding it in the last four years. 
 
Previous estimates have put NHS spending on the treatment at £4m a year - this pays for four dedicated homeopathic hospitals and prescriptions. 
The findings by GP provoked a mixed response. 
 
Dr Vivienne Nathanson is head of science and ethics at the British Medical Association, which has a policy calling for no NHS funding for homeopathy. 
 
She said: "While the BMA supports the Department of Health view to allow primary care trusts to make their own decisions about how to spend their resources, we are concerned that scarce funding will be spent on treatment that has no evidence base and that may not work." 
 
But Cristal Sumner, chief executive of the British Homeopathic Association, said the spending was justified. 
 
"Many PCTs are still funding it because it is popular with patients and provides a cost-effective alternative when conventional treatments have failed." 
 
Homeopathy is a 200-year-old system of treatment that uses highly-diluted substances, sometimes so none of the original product is left. 
 
It is given orally in the belief that it will stimulate the body's self-healing mechanism.

Allium Cepa 
Begins sneezing, with increasing frequency. Watery discharge drips from nose; excoriates lip and wings of nose. (Ars., Arum trip.) Rawness in nose; copious lachrymation. Fluid from nose excoriating: from eyes bland. (Reverse of Euphrasia). Generally begins left side and goes to right. Every year in August (Naja) morning coryza with violent sneezing: very sensitive to odor of flowers and skin of peaches. Spring coryza: Hayfever in August every year on rising from bed, and handling peaches. 
 
Arsenicum 
Discharge burns a red streak over upper lip and about wings of nose, with sneezing and profuse, watery nasal discharge The typical Ars. patient is anxious, restless, often asthmatic, when his worst hour is soon alter midnight. Sneezing a prominent symptom, but sneezing no joke. Starts from tickling in one spot nose; after sneezing tickling as bad as before. Hay asthma. 
 
Arsenicum Iodatum 
Hay fever with fetid, corrosive discharge. Discharges excoriating, thick and yellow, resembling honey.

Arum Triphyllum 
A prickling sensation that cannot be left alone. Pinches and pricks, and bores into the nostrils, however sore. A dreadful catarrh. Nose stopped, worse left side. Sneezing worse during the night. Fluent acrid coryza, with lachrymation usually bland. (Comp. Allium Cepa.) Fluid from nose, produces rawness, smarting, burning: leaves red streaks as it flows over skin'. (Ars.) - KENT. 
 
Arundo Mauritanica 
KENT gives this drug in black type in the Repertory for Hay Fever. Hay fever begins with burning and itching of palate and conjunctiva. Coryza with snuffling. First water runs from the nose, later green mucus.With sneezing, pieces of indurated greenish mucus. Itching, burning, dryness of Schneiderian membrane. Curious symptoms, when sneezing, stitches in loins. 
 
Bromium 
Fluent coryza with frequent violent sneezing. Corrosive soreness under and margins of nose. Right 
nostril more affected. Aversion to smoking: to drinking cold water. 
 
Carbo Vegetabilis 
Frequent sneezing, with constant violent crawling and tickling in nose; lachrymation and biting pain in and above nose. Ineffectual desire to sneeze, with crawling in left nostril. Watery discharge, and sneezes day and night. Suffers from heat: is chilled by cold: sweats in a hot room. No comfortable place. 
 
Dulcamara 
Nostrils stopped up, cannot breathe through nose. (Lach) Constant sneezing, profuse watery discharge from nose and eyes. Worse open air: better in closed room: worse near newly cut grass: better at Seaside. (Nat.mur.) Eyes swelled and full and most affected, then nose, then again eyes. Dulc. cannot stand cold and wet: worse from chill when hot. 
 
Euphrasia 
Profuse acrid lachrymation, with profuse bland coryza (reverse of Allium Cepa). Short-acting remedy: very useful in catarrhal affections without fever. Sneezing; fluent bland coryza with acrid tears Eyes worse open air, and wind. 
 
Gelsemium 
Sneezing: hot face: feeling of great weight and tiredness in whole body and limbs. Violent morning 
paroxysms of sneezing: tingling in nose. Watery, excoriating discharge. Curious symptom, a feeling from throat up to left nostril, like a stream of scalding water. 
 
Kali Iodatum 
Violent sneezing, acrid, watery discharge. Worse cool air, worse open air: but patient feels better in open air: i.e.: finds no quarters for relief. Frontal sinuses involved with the coryza; much pain in forehead, eyes, cheekbones. 
 
Kali Phosphoricum 
Hay fever, said to be prophylactic. Itching in posterior nares. Sneezing ; at 2 a.m. Eyes burn, sting, swim in tears. Tongue coated like stale brownish liquid mustard. 
 
Lachesis 
Paroxysms of sneezing worse after sleep even in the day time. Headache extending into nose, with 
frequent and violent paroxysms of sneezing. Mucous membrane or nose thickened: dry stuffed sensation through head: face red, puffed: eyes seem almost pressed out. Red, sore nostrils and lips. Lach. is purple: sleeps into aggravation; throat sensitive to touch or pressure. 
 
Naja 
Much sneezing: water runs from nose: cannot lie down at night; dryness of air passages of nose. Hay 
fever. Suffocative attacks in August. (All. Cepa.). Like Lach. wakes suffocating gasping, choking. Rawness of trachea and larynx, as if excoriated. 
 
Natrum Muriaticum 
Squirming as from a small worm. Watery discharge from eyes and nose. Severe coryza, had to lay a 
towel under nose. Woke with headache; after rising nasal discharge with violent and frequent sneezing. Loss of taste and smell: cough from tickling in throat pit. Lachrymation acrid; canthi red and sore. Characteristics: Worse in sun; desire for salt in hay fever, better at seaside. Recorded case, cured by a swim in the sea. 
 
Nux Vomica 
Distressing prolonged paroxysms of sneezing. Excessive irritation in nose, eyes. face; - Heat as if a hot iron plate were near it. Itching extends to larynx and trachea. Nux is very irritable: very sensitive to cold. 
 
Psorinum 
A sort of continuous hay fever, runs all the year and ripens up in the Fall. Catarrhal state of eyes and 
nose. Nose dries up part of the time and runs part of the time: must continually use handkerchief. "Hay fever a difficult condition to fit a remedy to; constitution must be built up before hay fever will cease" - KENT. Must wrap up in hottest summer. Wants head covered. Skin greasy, oily, looks unwashed. 
 
Ranunculus 
Eyes smart; lips burn and are sore. Nose stuffed, especially evenings, with pressure root of nose and 
tingling and crawling inside. May attack posterior nares: hawks and swallow in effort to scratch affected part. (Comp. Wyeth.) Hoarseness: stitching pains chest: muscles sore. 
 
Sabadilla 
Spasmodic sneezing: fluent coryza. Nostrils stuffed up: inspirations through nose laboured: snoring. 
Itching in nose; bleeding from nose. (Zinc.)Violent sneezing; with copious watery discharge. Severe frontal pains and redness eyelids. Very sensitive to smell of garlic. 
 
Sanguinaria 
Rose colds in June. Sensitive to flowers and odors. Hay fever with burning in nose, throat - dry: as if 
mucous membranes would crack open. Dry burning in larynx with hoarseness of chest with asthma. Palms dry, burning, wrinkled. Burning palms and soles: puts them out of bed. (Sulph., Puls., Cham., Med.) 
 
Silica 
begins with itching and tingling in nose. Violent sneezing and excoriating discharge. Itching in posterior nares, or orifice of Eustachian tubes. (Ars., Sil., Wyeth.) 
 
Sinapis Nigra 
Mucous membrane of nose dry and hot: worse afternoon and evening: one nostril affected, or alternate nostrils. Nose swollen, stuffed: discharges a thin acrid mucus. (Ailanthus.) Eyes suffused, itch, smart . 
 
Sticta Pulmonaria 
Constant need to blow nose, but no discharge results on account of dryness. Nose is stuffed up; secretion drying so rapidly it cannot be discharged. Almost constant sneezing; tingling right side nose. Fullness right side forehead to root nose. Excessive dryness of soft palate. Tickling high up in pharynx. 
 
Wyethia 
Peculiar itching in roof of mouth (Arund.), for relief patient must draw tongue back and forth over soft palate; with this coryza, sneezing, etc. 
 
Zincum 
Frequent sneezing starts with cutting-crawling in nose, without coryza; or fluent coryza; sensitive

Abstract 
 
OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) design of usual care compared with usual care plus adjunctive care by a homeopath for patients with Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). 
 
METHODS: In a pragmatic parallel group RCT design, adults with a diagnosis of FMS (ACR criteria) were randomly allocated to usual care or usual care plus adjunctive care by a homeopath. Adjunctive care consisted of five in depth interviews and individualised homeopathic medicines. The primary outcome measure was the difference in Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) total score at 22 weeks. 
 
RESULTS: 47 patients were recruited. Drop out rate in the usual care group was higher than the homeopath care group (8/24 vs 3/23). Adjusted for baseline, there was a significantly greater mean reduction in the FIQ total score (function) in the homeopath care group than the usual care group (-7.62 vs 3.63). There were significantly greater reductions in the homeopath care group in the McGill pain score, FIQ fatigue and tiredness upon waking scores. We found a small effect on pain score (0.21, 95% CI -1.42 to 1.84); but a large effect on function (0.81, 95% CI -8.17 to 9.79). There were no reported adverse events. 
 
CONCLUSIONS: Given the acceptability of the treatment and the clinically relevant effect on function, there is a need for a definitive study to assess the clinical and cost effectiveness of adjunctive healthcare by a homeopath for patients with FMS.

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">New research suggests water remembers what has been dissolved in it, even after dilution beyond the point where no molecule of the original substances could remain. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho reports. 
 
For more than a century, practitioners of homeopathy have used highly diluted solutions of medicinal substances to treat diseases. Some substances are diluted way beyond the point at which no trace of the original substances could remain. It is as though the water has retained memory of the departed molecules. This has aroused a great deal of scepticism within the conventional medical and scientific community. To this day, ‘homeopathic’ is used as a term of derision, to indicate something imagined that has no reality. 
 
But a series of recent discoveries in the conventional scientific community is making people think again. 
 
First, there were the South Korean chemists who discovered two years ago that molecules dissolved in water clump together as they get more diluted (see SiS 15), which was totally unexpected; and further more, the size of the clumps depends on the history of dilution, making a mockery of the ‘laws of chemistry’. 
 
Now, physicist Louis Rey in Lausanne, Switzerland, has published a paper in the mainstream journal, Physica A, describing experiments that suggest water does have a memory of molecules that have been diluted away, as can be demonstrated by a relatively new physical technique that measures thermoluminescence. 
 
In this technique, the material is ‘activated’ by irradiation at low temperature, with UV, X-rays, electron beams, or other high-energy sub-atomic particles. This causes electrons to come loose from the atoms and molecules, creating ‘electron-hole pairs’ that become separated and trapped at different energy levels. 
 
Then, when the irradiated material is warmed up, it releases the absorbed energy and the trapped electrons and holes come together and recombine. This causes the release of a characteristic glow of light, peaking at different temperatures depending on the magnitude of the separation between electron and hole. 
 
As a general rule, the phenomenon is observed in crystals with an ordered arrangement of atoms and molecules, but it is also seen in disordered materials such as glasses. In this mechanism, imperfections in the atomic/molecular lattice are considered to be the sites at which luminescence appears. 
 
Rey decided to use the technique to investigate water, starting with heavy water or deuterium oxide that’s been frozen into ice at a temperature of 77K. The absolute temperature scale (degree K, after Lord Kelvin) is used in science. (The zero degree K is equivalent to –273 C, and deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen which is twice as heavy as hydrogen). 
 
 
 
As the ice warms up, a first peak of luminescence appears near 120K, and a second peak near 166 K. Heavy water gives a much stronger signal than water. In both cases, samples that were not irradiated gave no signals at all. 
 
For both water and heavy water, the relative intensity of the thermoluminescence depends on the irradiation dose. There has been a suggestion that peak 2 comes from the hydrogen-bonded network within ice, whereas peak 1 comes from the individual molecules. This was confirmed by looking at a totally different material that is known to present strong hydrogen bonds, which showed a similar glow in the peak 2 region, but nothing in peak 1. 
 
Rey then investigated what would happen when he dissolved some chemicals in the water and diluted it in steps of one hundred fold with vigorous stirring (as in the preparation of homeopathic remedies), until he reached a concentration of 10 to the power -30 g per centilitre, and compare that to the control that has not had any chemical dissolved in it and diluted in the same way. 
 
The samples were frozen and activated with irradiation as usual. 
 
Much to his surprise, when lithium chloride, LiCl, a chemical that would be expected to break hydrogen bonds between water molecules was added, and then diluted away, the thermoluminescent glow became reduced, but the reduction of peak 2 was greater relative to peak 1. Sodium chloride, NaCl, had the same effect albeit to a lesser degree. 
 
It appears, therefore, that substances like LiCl and NaCl can modify the hydrogen-bonded network of water, and that this modification remains even when the molecules have been diluted away. 
 
The fact that this ‘memory’ remains, in spite of, or because of vigorous stirring or shaking at successive dilutions, indicates that the ‘memory’ is by no means static, but depends on a dynamic process, perhaps a collective quantum excitation of water molecules that has a high degree of stability (see "The strangeness of water and homeopathic memory", SiS 15).

We all know that human organism works as an integrated totality, whether performing its normal functions or defending itself from morbific stimuli. As a doctor our duty is to stimulate/strengthen that mechanism by prescribing a correct similimum in case of deviation from any normal state. Simillimum is the medicine which matches with the resonant frequency of an individual. To find the simillimum it is necessary to acquire the totality of symptoms by collecting the most intimate and meaningful expressions of the patient’s life on all the three levels (mental,emotional,physical). It is necessary to elicit the core of the patient with those expressions and then match it with the essence of materia medica. 
In the The Essence of Materia Medica, George Vithoulkas has painted the essence/core/nucleus of 51 remedies. While reading every remedy, a clear portrait of the patient with minute details comes out in front of you. George Vithoulkas has given a description of the type of person most commonly affected by a remedy at the start of most remedy portraits, for e.g. the Kali carb patient with a strong sense of duty heightened to an inflexible, rigid degree. In every medicine Vithoulkas has described a common thread/theme going at all three levels of the patient, for e.g. in Alumina, the theme of delayed action and slowness is visible at all the three levels. 
Many medicines are compared with other closely related medicines having similar symptoms. The comparison of the essence of various related medicines helps a lot in choosing a remedy. 
This book is reflective of the vast clinical experience and knowledge of Vithoulkas. With this book, Vithoulkas has carried the efforts of Kent in creating the remedy portraits to the next level. Vithoulkas has himself acknowledged that he has drawn a lot from the Kent’s Materia 
 
Medica and Repertory. Vithoulkas has been able to show the development of remedy pictures in a very evolutionary manner, which helps in creating a better understanding of the medicines presented in this work. The book is well compiled and the presentation of the material is very lucid and systematic. 
George Vithoulkas and his work needs no introduction or recommendation. Yet, this is a book which I would like to recommend to every homeopath.

Asa Hershoff in his book " Homeopathy for Musculoskeletal healing " explains "pain" as follows. " Pain is a biochemical neurological and psychological event that occurs when an impulse,stimulated by tissue changes, travels through nervous pathways and reaches the brain." 
 
Pain can be induced by the nerves,ligaments, bone coverings,joint linings, and muscles.The sensation of pain as felt by the patient may not be enough when looking for a homeopathic remedy, it is the subjective quality of the pain which is very important in finding the correct remedy. 
 
To understand the subjective quality of pain one has to be keen enough to listen to the patient as he/she expresses the pain in their own words.It is converting the words of the patient into appropriate rubrics and then applying it to determine the medicine is what constitute good homeopathy; 
 
We will now see what are the types of pains and their further subdivision. 
 
TYPES OF PAIN. 
 
SHARP PAIN:

Now that we have a good idea of pain,which is an important symptom, as such it will have three components,which are, Location, Sensation, and Modality. Another adjunct to this is the Concomitant.This in itself could be another symptom;Thus in dealing with pain all these factors must be considered to arrive at the right choice of homeopathic medicine.

You can't overdose on homeopathic remedies; Why won't homeopathy skeptics drink their own medicine?

It's really quite hilarious to see this unfold: Homeopathy skeptics and vicious Big Pharma attack dogs are running around the globe in ludicrous demonstrations where they consume huge doses of homeopathic remedies in public and then claim that because they don't die of an "overdose," these medicines therefore don't work. 
 
Notice that they never consume their own medicines in large doses? Chemotherapy? Statin drugs? Blood thinners? They wouldn't dare drink those. In fact, today I'm challenging the homeopathic skeptics and other medical fundamentalists to a "drink-a-thon" test to see which medicines will kill you faster. But we'll get to that in a minute... 
 
First, let's get to the understanding of why the idea that you could "overdose" on homeopathic remedies is ridiculous to begin with. 
 
It requires an elevated worldview 
 
Teaching the so-called "skeptics" about how homeopathic medicine really works is a bit like trying to convince flat Earthers that the planet is really spherical. These skeptics, you see, approach homeopathy as if it were a drug (because that's all they really know). And in their world, all drugs are dangerous if you overdose on them, which makes sense from their point of view because they're educated solely in dangerous, synthetically-derived chemicals that are incompatible with the human body. 
 
So it may be understandable at some level that since this is all the medical fundamentalists (skeptics) know, they have probably not attained the level of sophistication required to understand the far more advanced mechanisms of homeopathy. It's a bit like trying to teach a five-year-old child how to play Mozart. And while that may have worked if your child was Mozart, it probably doesn't work for anyone else. 
 
Homeopathy isn't a drug 
 
Homeopathy, you see, isn't a drug. It's not a chemical. So you can drink all you want and you won't overdose on it. That's not a defect in homeopathy -- it's a remarkable advantage! It means that while 200,000+ Americans are killed each year by toxic pharmaceutical drugs, no one is harmed by homeopathy. Not even those who are desperately trying to be harmed by it! 
 
It seems these skeptics really want everything to be more dangerous because the world of toxicity is so much more familiar to them. What these not-so-amazing skeptics would like to see, it seems, is more people dropping dead from dangerous side effects. Then they would believe homeopathy was real. 
 
 
 
That's the way ignorant conventional medicine operates today: You know the drugs are kicking in when you start getting worse. Toxicity and conventional medicine go hand in hand. 
 
But homeopathy isn't a chemical. It's a resonance. A vibration, or a harmony. It's the restructuring of water to resonate with the particular energy of a plant or substance. We can get into the physics of it in a subsequent article, but for now it's easy to recognize that even from a conventional physics point of view, liquid water has tremendous energy, and it's constantly in motion, not just at the molecular level but also at the level of its subatomic particles and so-called "orbiting electrons" which aren't even orbiting in the first place. Electrons are vibrations and not physical objects. 
 
But, oh yeah, I forgot. The skeptics don't know that yet. That won't be taught that in university physics classes until probably 2020, at which point most of them will probably be dead from taking pharmaceuticals to treat their own diseases. For now, they've all convinced themselves that electrons are -- get this -- tiny "particles" flying around atomic nuclei and tremendous speeds which just happen to stay in their little orbits like little perpetual motion machines (which they say are impossible), until all of a sudden, these electron "particles" inexplicably leap to a higher or lower orbit without occupying the space in-between those orbits at any moment. Yep, magic teleporting particles! That's the "scientific" explanation of these folks. No wonder so many of them are magicians: Believing their explanations requires that you believe in particle magic! 
 
But getting back to water and vibrations, which isn't magic but rather vibrational physics, you can't overdose on a harmony. If you have one violin playing a note in your room, and you add ten more violins -- or a hundred more -- it's all still the same harmony (with all its complex higher frequencies, too). There's no toxicity to it. 
 
Homeopathy works much the same way: You can drink a few drops or a few gallons. It's the same harmony being introduced into your body's living cells, regardless of the quantity. And drinking a few gallons of it will only make you urinate a whole lot, which I suppose the skeptics have been doing a lot these days, staring down into the toilet bowl with their pants unzipped, declaring, "I was right! I can't overdose on it!" Talk about expensive urine, eh? 
 
It's hilarious, in fact, that those who would try to disparage homeopathy would even think that attempting to "overdose" on it proves anything at all. What it really shows is that they utterly lack any understanding of the underlying theories of how homeopathy works -- theories that Nobel Prize winner Luc Montagnier -- the discovered of the AIDS virus -- now publicly supports, by the way. 
 
Bent on their own destruction 
 
What really drives the skeptics crazy is that no matter how hard they try, they just can't seem to kill themselves. To be so out of touch with the beautiful, loving and holographic nature of the universe around us is to retreat to a self-loathing worldview that can only be resolved through self destruction. These skeptics just want to kill themselves... and they wouldn't mind taking a few of you along with them, too. Hence their promotion of vaccines, pharmaceuticals, chemotherapy and water fluoridation. 
 
These public demonstrations of chugging what they call "drugs" can only be called psychopathic "public suicide attempts" -- and they can't even get that right, either. (They're drinking the wrong stuff...) 
 
I would suggest they try a few fluid ounces of their own medicines if they want to achieve the overdoses they're looking for. A few ounces of chemotherapy would do the trick nicely. Let me know if one of them tries that, and we'll carry the news: "Skeptic dies after drinking his own medicine. Story at eleven..." 
 
In fact, if these skeptics are looking to kill themselves, they need look no further than the tens of thousands of toxic drugs, vaccines, chemotherapy agents, radiation procedures and barbaric surgical procedures that they claim will heal you! Yep, the stuff they say is good for you is the stuff they won't drink. 
 
And therein lies my challenge... 
 
Why I'm challenging skeptics to drink a gallon of chemotherapy 
 
I am hereby challenging the skeptics to a public drink-a-thon, each drinking the medicines we advocate. I'll meet them in a public place, and we'll each drink the medicines we believe in the most. 
 
I'll bring a gallon of homeopathic remedies and healing raw juices, and the medical fundamentalists and their supporters (the more, the merrier) can each bring a gallon of the liquid forms of chemotherapy, blood pressure medications, coumadin, or statin drugs. We'll chug them in public and see who's left standing. The results get posted on YouTube for the whole world to see. We'll title the video, "SKEPTICS COMMIT MASS SUICIDE BY DRINKING PHARMACEUTICALS AS IF THEY WERE KOOL-AID." Jonestown, anyone? 
 
Do you have any doubt which of us will be left standing? Sure, I may need to pee a whole lot, but the restrooms won't be crowded, because all the skeptics won't be needing them anymore. 
 
That outcome, my friends, would be sad, but newsworthy. More importantly, it would prove an important point: Medicine should be safe for people to consume, not so deadly that you drop dead after consuming it, which is what often happens with pharmaceuticals. 
 
But, alas, my challenge will certainly never be accepted. None of the magicians, skeptics of medical fundamentalists will be publicly chugging chemotherapy any time soon, nor any other large doses of liquid pharmaceuticals. Why? Because they know how toxic those chemicals are. 
 
Do you notice the irony here? The only medicines they're willing to consume in large doses in public are homeopathic remedies! They won't dare consume large quantities of the medicines they all say YOU should be taking! (The pharma drugs.) 
 
And therein rests the truth in all this: Even the skeptics know that homeopathy is inherently safer than their own medicines. 
 
No wonder they keep attacking it: If people found out about safe medicine, where would all of Big Pharma's repeat business come from? After all, the best thing about chemotherapy (from Big Pharma's point of view) is that it creates repeat business from liver damage, kidney damage and brain damage. 
 
All these pharmaceutical poisons are so damaging to the human body -- and brain -- that these is probably one of the main reasons why the skeptics who take all these drugs are incapable of understanding high-vibration advanced medicine. A vaccine shot every year does wonders for lowering the IQ and killing off the creative thinking portions of the brain, after all. 
 
So if you're looking for safe medicine, definitely take a look at homeopathic remedies. They so safe that even the critics can't overdose on them... but you have to admit the attempt makes for great entertainment.

The Case For Homeopathic Medicine: The Historical and Scientific Evidence

Dana Ullman is a superb proponent of homeopathy's effectiveness. His arguments, when read honestly, describe brilliantly how the claims against its efficacy are flawed, that the claims for no proof are false, and that the studies purportedly showing its ineffectiveness are gravely flawed. Here are his arguments: 
 
A lot of people today are confused about what homeopathy is (and isn't), and this situation is not helped by the skeptics of homeopathy who go to incredible extents to exaggerate and misconstrue what homeopathic medicine is and who commonly provide misinformation about it. It is more than a tad ironic that these "skeptics" who hold themselves out as "defenders of medical science" have exhibited an embarrassingly poor scientific attitude when evaluating what homeopathy is and what the scientific evidence does and doesn't say about it. 
 
Because many skeptics of homeopathy today indulge in spreading misinformation about homeopathy, this blog is addressed at setting the record straight and is packed with references to confirm the veracity of what is being asserted here. 
 
First, to clarify, advocating for or using homeopathic medicines does not preclude appreciation for or use of selective conventional medical treatment. Advocates of homeopathy simply honor the Hippocratic tradition of "First, do no harm" and therefore seek to explore and utilize safer methods before resorting to more risky treatments. This perspective has historical and international roots, and it is thus no surprise that American health care which has been so resistant to homeopathic and natural therapies in its mainstream institutions is presently ranked 37th in the world in the performance of its health care system.(1) In comparison, the number one ranked country in the world is France, a country in which around 40 percent of the population uses homeopathic medicines and around 30 percent of its family physicians prescribe them (2). 
 
The Evidence IS There 
 
The fact that homeopathy became extremely popular during the 19th century primarily because of its impressive successes in treating the infectious disease epidemics that raged during that time is a fact that is totally ignored by skeptics.(3)(4)(5) It is highly unlikely that a placebo response is the explanation for homeopathy's notable successes in treating epidemics of cholera, yellow fever, scarlet fever, typhoid, pneumonia, or influenza. Skeptics are wonderfully clever in trying to make up stories and excuses for the good and often amazing results that people get from homeopathic medicines. Most often, however, they simply say that "old news is no news," as they brag about not learning from the past as though this is a good thing. 
 
There are more than 150 placebo controlled clinical studies, most of which have shown positive results, either compared with a placebo or compared with a conventional drug.(6-10) 
 
 
 
If that were not enough, studies testing the effects of homeopathic medicines on cell cultures, plants, animals, physics experiments, and chemistry trials have shown statistically significant effects. (11-16) Needless to say, the placebo effect in these basic science studies is virtually non-existent, while the effects from homeopathic doses are significant and sometimes substantial. 
 
Skeptics are virulently silent on the entire field of hormesis (the multidisciplinary science of evaluating the power of small doses of varied biological systems) and its thousands of studies in a wide variety of scientific disciplines. (17)(18) This silence on hormesis is completely understandable because their acknowledgement of this body of evidence obliterates much of their criticisms of homeopathy. The doses of homeopathic medicines that are commonly sold in health food stores and pharmacies throughout the world are in a similar low dosage range to the thousands of hormesis studies on low-dose effects. It is very odd that skeptics ignore the thousands of studies in this field, and yet, these same skeptics repeat their embarrassingly uninformed mantra of "where is the research?" It is indeed no wonder that these skeptics are often referred to as "denialists" rather than skeptics. 
 
It is readily acknowledged that the pharmacological process of making homeopathic medicines is often misunderstood or inadequately understood. Homeopathic medicines are made with a specific process, called potentization, that is unique to homeopathy. Each medicine is made in double-distilled water in a glass test-tube, diluted in a 1:10 or 1:100 solution that is vigorously shaken 40 or more times. Then, this process of dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking) is repeated 3, 6, 12, 30, 200, 1,000, or more times. Although one would think that one is diluting out whatever was in the original solution, the immense worldwide experience using homeopathic medicines over the past 200 years proves otherwise. 
 
There is a body of intriguing but not yet fully verified theories about how homeopathic medicines work. These theories are too technical for this article, though I sincerely hope that the "good skeptics" out there will work to explore and help figure out the many mysteries that may explain homeopathy, rather than repeat the old reactionary mantra that "it cannot work." 
 
 
 
For instance, the "silica hypothesis" is particularly intriguing, especially in light of the fact that approximately 6 parts per million of "silica fragments" or "chips" are known to fall off the walls of glass vial during the shaking process. In addition, the shaking process generates nanobubbles and transient localized regions of high pressure topping 10,000 atmospheres that have been hypothesized to alter the water in a significant and persistent way.(19) 
 
Because a homeopathic medicine is selected for its unique ability to cause the specific pattern or syndrome of symptoms that it is known to cause in overdose, a living organism has a hypersensitivity to even extremely small doses of the correctly chosen homeopathic medicine. Just as a "C" note of a piano is hypersensitive to other "C" notes, living organisms are hypersensitive to extremely small doses of medicines that are made from substances that cause the similar symptoms that the sick person is experiencing. This ancient principle, "like cures like," was heralded by the Oracle at Delphi, the Bible, and various Eastern cultures, and the fact that modern-day immunology and allergy treatments derive from the primary principle of homeopathy, "the law of similars," provides additional substantiation to this system of medicine. Conventional allergy treatment and vaccination are two of the very few conventional medical treatments that do something to augment immune response, and yet, both of these treatments derive from the homeopathic principle of similars. 
 
Actually, a better description of this principle of similars is the "principle of resonance," which any student of music knows has both power and hypersensitivity. The additional wisdom of this homeopathic principle is that its use leads to the prescription of medicines that mimic, rather than that suppress, the symptoms and the innate intelligence of the human body. Because homeopathic medicines are prescribed for their ability to mimic the similar symptoms that the sick person is experiencing, it is no wonder that people find that these medicines augment immune competence and improve body and mind health. 
 
In this light, homeopathy can and should be considered a type of "medical biomimicry" and a "resonance medicine." 
 
Homeopaths may not yet adequately understand precisely how their medicines work, but the body of historical and present-day evidence and experience is simply too significant to ignore. The fact that so many highly respected people and cultural heroes over the past 200 years have used and advocated for homeopathy provides additional evidence for this medical system. Some of these cultural heroes include eleven U.S. Presidents, six popes, JD Rockefeller, Charles Darwin, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, and scores of literary greats, corporate leaders, sports superstars, world-class musicians, and monarchs from virtually every European country.(20) 
 
It is also important to acknowledge that hundreds of thousands, even millions, of medical doctors learned conventional medicine but have used homeopathic medicines in conjunction with or (commonly) as replacement for conventional medicines. In comparison, the number of medical professionals who have trained in homeopathy and then stopped using these medicines is extremely small. The fact that homeopathic medicine represents the leading medical alternative in Europe and in significant portions of Asia (especially India and Pakistan) provides additional support for this often misunderstood medical science and art. In fact, over 100 million people in India depend solely on this form of medical care.(21) Further, according to an A.C. Neilsen survey, 62 percent of current homeopathy users in India have never tried conventional medicines and 82 percent of homeopathy users would not switch to conventional treatments.(22) 
 
 
The So-Called Best Evidence that Homeopathy Does Not Work 
 
Sadly and strangely, the skeptics of homeopathy put much of their belief that homeopathy does not work on a review and comparison of homeopathic and conventional medical research that was published in the Lancet in 2005.(23) The Lancet even published an editorial in this same issue entitled "The End of Homeopathy." 
 
However, this "evidence" is a very controversial and some say extremely flawed review of homeopathic research.(24)(25) This review sought to compare 110 placebo-controlled homeopathic studies and with a "matched" group of 110 studies testing conventional medications. The researchers appropriately sought to evaluate only those studies that their criteria deemed of sufficiently "high quality." 
 
Although the idea of comparing studies is a good idea, the way that this group of researchers evaluated only a small subset of all studies showed an initial and ongoing bias, as you shall soon see... 
 
First, it is important to know that the leader of this review of homeopathic research is A. Shang's boss (and co-author of this article) is M. Eggers, a vocal noted skeptic of homeopathy. Second, evidence of strong bias against homeopathy by these researchers was brought to light by the Lancet's senior editor, Zoe Mullan, who acknowledged that, "Professor Eggers stated at the onset that he expected to find that homeopathy had no effect other than that of placebo."(26) 
 
Shang and his team deemed that "high quality trials" must fit certain criteria. It must be acknowledged that two other meta-analyses that have previously been published in the Lancet (1997) and the British Medical Journal (1991) have deemed several trials that had strongly positive effects from homeopathic treatment as "high quality" than was not deemed as such by Shang (and he has never commented about this discrepancy). 
 
Despite the problems in comparing conventional medical research and homeopathic research, let's assume that the two groups of studies ARE comparable. It is therefore more than a tad ironic that they found 21 of the homeopathic studies fit this definition of "high quality" clinical researcher but only 9 of the conventional studies did so. One would have thought that the researchers would then compare these "high quality" trials. However, this result would have shown that there IS a difference between homeopathic treatment and a placebo in a variety of ailments, and authors (who are known skeptics of homeopathy) could not allow that conclusion. 
 
Instead, Shang's group chose to only evaluate a much smaller subset of these high quality trials. They limited the review to the largest trials in both groups to 8 homeopathic trials (with at least 98 subjects) and six conventional trials (with at least 146 subjects). Strangely enough, when evaluating only this last group of larger studies, they were not comparable in ANY way. The diseases that they treated were all different. And conveniently enough, the researchers asserted that one of the large trials testing homeopathic medicines in the treatment of patients with polyarthritis (arthritis in multiple joints) did not have a comparable trial (they actually asserted with complete seriousness that there has never been a study of patients with this common malady, and rather than admit that this large trial of 175 patients which showed significant efficacy of treatment, they simply threw out the trial from their evaluation). When one realizes that NONE of the studies in the final evaluation matched each other in any way, the researchers' decision to throw out this study on the homeopathic treatment of people with polyarthritis is additional evidence of the researcher's strong biases and their efforts to prove homeopathy as a placebo "by hook or by crook." 
 
The researchers put a higher value of those studies with larger numbers of patients because they asserted that smaller trials are "biased," even though they were randomized double-blind and placebo studies (and many of which were published in the Lancet, the BMJ, and other highly respected conventional medical journals). One group of four studies on patients with respiratory allergies which included 253 subjects and was published in the BMJ(27) was not a part of the final analysis without explanation. An earlier study published in the Lancet with 144 subjects suffering from hay fever was also missing from the final analysis.(28) The fact that these studies showed a significant benefit from homeopathic treatment was ignored entirely. 
 
Using large number of subjects is "do-able" in homeopathy, though it is simply less frequent, due to the high costs of such studies and due to the fact that the profit margin for the sale of homeopathic medicines does not even approach that of conventional drugs. Also, it is a lot easier using conventional medicine than homeopathic medicine in studies because the very nature of homeopathy is the necessity to evaluate a person's overall syndrome, not just any localized disease. This type of sophistication in individualized treatment is a part of good acupuncture treatment as well. 
 
It is therefore not surprising that six of the eight large homeopathic trials gave the same homeopathic medicine to every subject, no matter what symptoms of the disease the subjects in the experiments experienced. Astonishingly enough, the Shang review included a "weight-loss" study in their final review. The "study" used Thyroidinum 30C (a small dose of thyroid gland), even though this remedy is not reported in the homeopathic literature as an appropriate medicine for this condition. 
 
Even though a study can be "well designed" and "well conducted," it will become a "junk science" study if the drug used is totally inappropriate for the sick person. As it turns out, six of the eight homeopathic studies in the final analysis by Shang used homeopathic medicines that were unlikely to be prescribed by a practicing homeopath (they prescribe their medicines based on the overall syndrome of physical and psychological symptoms the patient has, not just based on the diagnosed name of the disease, except in exceptional situations). In research and statistics, good studies need to have "internal validity" (how the study was designed and conducted) and "external validity" (how the treatment in the study can be generalized to clinical practice). The Shang group did not even seek to evaluate whether any of the studies had "external validity" or not. Sad, but true. 
 
Perhaps the most interesting fact about this study was totally ignored by its authors. Shang and his team purposefully did not evaluate safety issues of treatment. Therefore, it is not surprising that at least three of the conventional medical treatments that were found to be "effective" initially were later found to be so dangerous that the drugs were withdrawn from medical use. 
 
Finally, imagine if researchers evaluated ALL studies for which antibiotics were used. Although antibiotics are primarily effective in the treatment of bacterial infections, they have been tested to treat a wide variety of infections, not just bacterial, but as we all know, antibiotics are not effective for anything other than bacterial infection (and even then, the frequency of use of antibiotics will reduce their efficacy because the bacteria adapt to it). Just because antibiotics are not effective for most conditions does not mean that specific antibiotics are ineffective for specific conditions. Good science requires specificity, not over-generalized statements, as Shang and his ilk have made. 
 
Although the above seems to be a simple and logical statement, skeptics of homeopathy prove their paucity of rational thought by lumping together ALL types of homeopathic research, then throwing out or ignoring the vast majority of studies (including MOST of the studies that the researchers defined as "high quality"), and using studies that are not good examples of how homeopathy is practiced. 
 
For instance, the World Health Organization has deemed that childhood diarrhea represents one of the most serious public health problems in the world today because millions of children die each year as a result of dehydration from diarrhea. With this concern in mind, three randomized double-blind trials were conducted testing individually chosen homeopathic medicines for children with diarrhea. One of these studies was published in Pediatrics,(29) and another study was published in another highly respected pediatric medical journal.(30) All three of these trials showed a significant benefit from homeopathic treatment when compared with placebo. 
 
Similarly, four double-blind placebo controlled trials has shown benefit from the homeopathic medicine, Oscillococcinum, in the treatment of influenza.(31) Research has consistently found it to be effective in the treatment of influenza, though it does not seem to be effective in its prevention. 
 
As for homeopathy and respiratory allergies, reference above was already made to four studies that showed effectiveness of homeopathic treatment (2 of which were published in the BMJ and one of which was published in the Lancet). Further, a review of seven double-blind and placebo controlled studies showed that homeopathic doses of Galphimia glauca were effective in treating people with hay fever.(32) 
 
The two new re-analyses of the Shang review of homeopathic research prove the old cliche, garbage in, garbage out. Junk data indeed creates junk science which creates junk and meaningless results. And ironically, THIS study is considered the 'best" evidence that homeopathy does not work. If this is the best that they have, skepticism of homeopathy is not only dead, it is stupid dead. 
 
While I would like to think that this article would finally put the last nail in the coffin of skeptics of homeopathy, I know that Big Pharma will not allow that to happen. Further, these skeptics are often like religious fundamentalists who will believe what they want to believe no matter what. And then, there's the impact from cognitive dissonance: many people who have invested their time and energy into conventional medicine simply cannot imagine admitting that homeopathy may have any benefit. It may be time to put that rotary telephone in the attic along with the typewriter and your former skepticism of homeopathic medicine. 
 
 
A Simple Challenge to Skeptics 
 
To adequately and accurately evaluate homeopathy, one has to evaluate the whole body of evidence that has enabled homeopathy to persist for 200+ years. While evaluating double-blind clinical trials is important, so is evaluating the wide body of basic sciences, as well as the clinical outcome trials, the epidemiological studies, the cost-effectiveness literature, and the serial case review trials. It is strange that these defenders of science would remain so ignorant of the whole body of evidence that homeopathic medicine stands. Some leading skeptics of homeopathy even pride themselves on the value of having a closed mind to homeopathy.(33) 
 
Skeptics of homeopathy assume that homeopaths, more than any other type of health practitioner, have incredible magic powers to elicit a placebo effect. We all acknowledge a certain power of the placebo in treating the "worried well," but do skeptics of homeopathy really believe that a placebo effect is consistently effective to treat all of the serious illnesses that are commonly treated by homeopaths...and for which good double-blind studies show efficacy? Studies at the University of Vienna showed "substantial significance" in treating patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease...the number four reason that people in the USA die!)(34) and severe sepsis (a condition which kills 50 percent of patients in hospitals who are inflicted with it, and yet, homeopathic treatment has been found to cut this death rate in HALF!).(35) 
 
The vast majority of homeopaths throughout the world are medical doctors or some other licensed or certified health professional who practice family medicine and who see patients with varied acute and chronic ailments. Therefore, I personally challenge ANY skeptic of homeopathy to try to maintain a family practice and only dispense "sugar pills," rather than real homeopathic medicines. My challenge is simple: while seeing a wide variety of children and adults with various acute and chronic problems, take them off all of their conventional drugs (with the exception of insulin and a small selection of drugs of "medical necessity"), and prescribe only sugar pills...for just one week. 
 
When you consider that homeopaths do this for 52 weeks of the year, skeptics of homeopathy should not have any problem IF they think that homeopaths are only prescribing placebos. Let's see how many patients complain, call you late at night expressing concern about the ineffectiveness of your "medicine," and simply do not return for future health care. Any skeptic of homeopathy will be "cured" by this experience in humility. (For the record, I have offered hundreds of skeptics with this challenge, and not a single one has agreed to "prove" that placebo treatment can work in family medicine). 
 
To clarify, I honor good skepticism, for a healthy skepticism seeks to truly explore a subject with knowledge and without arrogance. Further, good skepticism seeks to understand the wide body of evidence that it is necessary to evaluate to determine veracity of phenomena. It is the bad or ugly skepticism that breeds an unscientific attitude and that is simply a form of denialism, or in some cases, hyper-denialism. 
 
Sadly, many of today skeptics are fundamentalists who epitomize a "closed mind." Deepak Chopra said it so well when he asserted, "professional skeptics who are self-appointed vigilantes dedicated to the suppression of curiosity" (huffingtonpost, Dec 27, 2009). When such people do not want to learn from the past, do not even read the research (or only read those studies that confirm their own point of view), and maintain a high degree of arrogance, such "skepticism" isn't skepticism at all: it is bad scientific thinking, it is an unhealthy attitude towards science, and it is a model for how not to learn. 
 
One of the leaders of the skeptics is famed magician James Randi, who like many skeptics is seemingly skeptical of everything (except conventional medicine). He, however, has begun to lose respect from his colleagues and scientists by his skepticism of global warming.(36) 
 
When the denialists assert and insist that homeopathy "cannot" work, I remind them that "science" and "medicine" are not just nouns but verbs...science and medicine are ever-changing. ..and what may be today's medicine is tomorrow's quackery, and what may today's quackery may be tomorrow's medicine. This is not a prediction; this is history. I encourage everyone and anyone who is seriously interested in the science and art of real healing to explore what homeopathic medicine has to offer. As Mark Twain once asserted in 1890, "you may honestly feel grateful that homeopathy survived the attempts of the allopathists [conventional physicians] to destroy it."
